A Cube Head/
Project Finished, the documentation photography is coming…
The algorithm-driven gig economy has led to many ghost jobs. These digital labors are abstracted by platforms and algorithms. The empathy of customers disappears in this process of abstraction materialization .
Not only being exploited physically, but also mentally. Without the tradition of tipping, what drives Chinese delivery drivers to pursue a five star rate is the strong punishment mechanism. They have to meet some over requirements from users: help take out the trash, walk up to the ninth floor, and draw a Peppa for users. Platforms force labor to wear some funny uniforms
To criticize this alienation of labor, specifically in China’s food delivery industry, I made an ironic sculpture, “A Cube Head”:a delivery driver without a transparent cube head, the cube is filled with everything represents commercial kitsch tendencies: teddy bears, cute cat toys, and Barbie dolls. Finally I will ride a bike, carry this sculpture, and take it for a drive.
